The PET Project

Medical consumables for Partial Exchange Transfusions, so children with Tetralogy of Fallot get the procedure at no cost to their families.

02The Story

250+

transfusions’ worth of consumables supplied across 5 editions

Volunteers, consultants and resident doctors with donated PET supplies at UCH

Children with Tetralogy of Fallot, a form of “hole in the heart”, can develop dangerously thick blood while they wait for heart surgery. A Partial Exchange Transfusion keeps them safe until then. We supply the medical consumables to the Paediatric Cardiology Unit at University College Hospital, so no child waits on money before treatment.

Each edition stocks the unit with consumables for 50 transfusions, and a paediatric cardiologist teaches caregivers how to care for their children at home.

  • We raise funds and buy the consumables the unit asks for.
  • We hand them over at the Children’s Outpatient Clinic with consultants, nurses and families present.
  • A specialist in childhood heart disease gives a health talk for caregivers at every edition.

Our AimConsumables for 50 transfusions every six months.

Guest speakers from the Neurology and Paediatric Cardiology Units of UCH gave health talks on hypertension and congenital heart defects, about 30 people were offered free eye screening, blood pressure and body mass index checks, and medical items for 50 Partial Exchange Transfusions were donated to the Paediatric Cardiology Unit as the first PET Project.
